Linde advances control of carbon potential in sintering atmospheres for improved MIM parts quality and reduced costs Experts to detail latest atmosphere-control test results at PowderMet 2015

Murray Hill & New Providence, N.J., U.S., May 12, 2015 – During a technical session at PowderMet 2015, experts from Linde will describe how its SINTERFLEX® system of total atmosphere control in sintering metal injection-molded (MIM) parts effectively doubled the amount of parts in-spec, resulting in significant cost savings.

PowderMet, the International Conference on Powder Metallurgy and Particulate Materials, is at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel, May 17-20.  The presentation is scheduled as follows:
May 19, Technical Session 16:  Atmospheres, 8 a.m.
“Cost-Savings and Quality Improvement by Controlling Furnace C-Potential Leading to In-spec Part Carbon Content – Further Improvements and Some Good News for MIM Industry”
Presenter:  Eric Will, Linde LLC

Addressing the latest developments in sintering metal injection-molded (MIM) parts, Eric Will, application sales engineer, Linde LLC, will present the most recent advances and improvements in carbon control. He will detail how the SINTERFLEX system controls carbon potential throughout the zones of a sintering furnace. In addition, he will describe traditional sintering and cooling of powder metal and MIM parts and review carbon control theory in MIM sintering.

Sintering is a high-temperature hardening process that fuses alloyed powders by applying heat below the melting point. The SINTERFLEX system optimizes control of the oxygen and carbon content level in the sintering atmosphere. By establishing a carbon-neutral atmosphere during sintering, the system completely avoids decarburization, creating more uniform carbon content of sintered parts throughout a specified period of time.
